Amelia stopped writing when Anna loudly cleared her throat. Her eyes darted to her sister-in-law’s face.

“Don’t give away too much information about yourself,” Anna said. “Not right away. You want to keep an air of mystery about you, don’t you think?”

Amelia brought her eyebrows together. She didn’t have any idea. But Anna had come to be with Daniel in this exact same way, so she ought to know what she was talking about. “Okay, if you think that’s best.”

“Especially since this Mr. Stone is so close by. He might come here and try to find you before you’re ready.”

“Well, that would show me what kind of man he is right away, wouldn’t it?”

Anna pressed her lips together and cleared her throat before replying, “Perhaps. But it would start everyone talking. There could be rumors going around about you and that’s just too much stress. You don’t want to deal with that. Best to keep it light at the beginning. It might draw him in even more.”

Amelia laughed, feeling a twinge of excitement in her normally peaceful chest. Could this be the start of something good? She was grateful to Anna for being so helpful. If only she could use the same tactics to get rid of her longing for Tom. If only he wasn’t taken and on his way to marriage.

Sometimes she wished she were a woman with loose morals. But the thought of attempting to win another woman’s man just turned her stomach. It wasn’t her. Best to distract herself with this young man, Mr. Stone, in Rickett’s Hollow.

At least she wouldn’t be extremely far from her family. She’d visit a lot more often than Martha Smith.
